Official Bio

“My first rule of politics is to be upfront and respectful with everyone.”

It was my great honor to be elected to the Colorado House in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002. In 2003, I served as House Minority Leader, as well as a member of the Executive Committee and the Legislative Council. I was named by a Vacancy Committee to the Colorado Senate in July of 2003 and successfully ran and was elected to the Colorado Senate in November 2004. I was named Chairman of the Senate Business, Labor and Technology Committee in January of 2005, appointed Vice-Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee. I also served as vice-chairman of the interim committee looking into auto insurance reform in 2005 and will be carrying several pieces of legislation in 2006 to address the issues brought forward.

My key issues include providing the highest quality education for our children, auto and health insurance reform including increasing the affordability and accessibility for all consumers, non-discrimination in employment and increasing consumer protections. I have sponsored legislation protecting victims of domestic violence, expanding the DNA database to cover more violent offenders, cracking down on consumer fraud by placing restrictions on phone solicitation, providing birth certificates to families after a stillbirth, providing access to emergency contraception for survivors of rape, increasing penalties for traffic violators in a construction zone and eliminating discrimination in the workplace.

In my day job, I’m an attorney with Hall & Evans, LLC, specializing in civil litigation. I have defended public and private entities in cases involving employment discrimination. I have personally handled all phases of litigation in a wide variety of claims including actions for professional negligence, personal injury and commercial litigation, including construction defect litigation and workers compensation. I was admitted to practice law in Colorado in 1987 and am a member of the Colorado, Denver and Colorado Women’s Bar associations.

I was born in Long Beach, California, on October 10, 1962. I graduated from Irvine High School in 1980 and earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1983 with a major in Political Science. I received my Juris Doctor from The National Law Center, George Washington University, Washington D.C., in 1987, with honors.

I live in downtown Denver with my partner of almost twelve years, and I’m proud to have served as a former director of the West Washington Park Neighborhood Association. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, golf, surfing, travel and basketball.
