41 person licensed under the laws of this state to practice medicine may
42 delegate to a physician assistant licensed by the board pursuant to section
43 12-240-113 the authority to perform acts that constitute the practice of
44 medicine and acts that physicians are authorized by law to perform to the
45 extent and in the manner authorized by rules promulgated by the board,
46 including the authority to prescribe medication, including controlled
47 substances, and dispense only the drugs designated by the board. The acts
48 must be consistent with sound medical practice. Each prescription for a
49 controlled substance, as defined in section 18-18-102 (5), issued by a
50 physician assistant licensed by the board shall be imprinted with the name
51 of the physician assistant's supervising physician. For all other
52 prescriptions issued by a physician assistant, the name and address of the
53 health facility and, if the health facility is a multi-speciality organization,
54 the name and address of the speciality clinic within the health facility
55 where the physician assistant is practicing must be imprinted on the
56 prescription. Nothing in this subsection (6) limits the ability of otherwise
1 licensed health personnel to perform delegated acts. The dispensing of
2 prescription medication by a physician assistant is subject to section
3 12-280-120 (6). A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT MAY:
4 (I) PROVIDE THE MEDICAL SERVICE FOR WHICH A PHYSICIAN
5 ASSISTANT IS PREPARED BY EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE AND
6 IS COMPETENT TO PERFORM, INCLUDING:
7 (A) OBTAINING A COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH HISTORY AND
8 PERFORM A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION;
9 (B) EVALUATING, DIAGNOSING, MANAGING, AND PROVIDING
10 MEDICAL TREATMENT;
11 (C) PERFORMING, ORDERING, AND EVALUATING DIAGNOSTIC
12 STUDIES AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES;
13 (D) EDUCATING A PATIENT ON HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISEASE
14 PREVENTION;
15 (E) PROVIDING CONSULTATION TO OTHER HEALTH CARE
16 PROFESSIONALS UPON REQUEST; AND
17 (F) WRITING A MEDICAL ORDER.
18 (II) PRESCRIBE AND DISPENSE MEDICATION, INCLUDING
19 CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES, IF:
20 (A) ALL PRESCRIPTIONS ISSUED BY A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
21 INCLUDE THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT'S NAME, THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF
22 THE HEALTH FACILITY, AND, IF THE HEALTH FACILITY IS A MULTISPECIALTY
23 ORGANIZATION, THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE SPECIALTY CLINIC
24 WITHIN THE HEALTH FACILITY WHERE THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT IS
25 PRACTICING; AND
26 (B) THE DISPENSING OF MEDICATION BY A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
27 IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 12-280-120 (6).
28 (III) OBTAIN INFORMED CONSENT;
29 (IV) SUPERVISE, DELEGATE, AND ASSIGN THERAPEUTIC AND
30 DIAGNOSTIC MEASURES;
31 (V) CERTIFY THE HEALTH OR DISABILITY OF A PATIENT AS
32 REQUIRED BY ANY LOCAL, STATE, OR FEDERAL PROGRAM;
33 (VI) AUTHENTICATE ANY DOCUMENT WITH THE SIGNATURE,
34 CERTIFICATION, STAMP, VERIFICATION, AFFIDAVIT, OR ENDORSEMENT OF
35 THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT IF THE DOCUMENT MAY BE AUTHENTICATED BY
36 THE SIGNATURE, CERTIFICATION, STAMP, VERIFICATION, AFFIDAVIT, OR
37 ENDORSEMENT OF A PHYSICIAN; AND
38 (VII) PRONOUNCE DEATH.".
